Pickleball was invented in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. The game was born out of a desire to entertain their families and make use of an old badminton court. Using ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball, they improvised a set of rules that would evolve into the pickleball we know today. A quirky detail from the early games involved a tree that partially obstructed the court. Instead of removing it, the founders adapted, creating a rule allowing players to serve with one foot inside the court on the obstructed side. This playful workaround reflected the founders' creative, family-centered approach to the game. Though modern pickleball courts are tree-free and follow standardized rules, the story of the tree remains a charming anecdote that highlights the sport’s informal and innovative origins.
In that spirit, our house rule regarding when a ball touches the HVAC unit during a tournament or league match is to REPLAY THE POINT.
However, we encourage players to use their best judgement and remember: no one will remember the score of their match at The Pickleball Pop-Up Farmington a year from now... so just focus on having fun!
